Is it chemical-free?

Virtually, yes. The copper and silver ions handle 90%+ of sanitisation, dramatically reducing or eliminating the need for chlorine, salt, and algicides. Most customers running a sand filter or salt chlorinator at low output use no additional chemicals at all. The only ongoing requirement is maintaining your pool's pH between 6.5 and 9.5, which is a simple weekly check.

How often do I replace electrodes?

Electrode lifespan depends on pool size and usage, but typically NEC-20 electrodes last 2–3 years and NEC-2000 electrodes last 3–5 years. Replacement is straightforward and takes around 15 minutes.

Does it work with a sand filter?

Yes — a sand filter works very well with the Claritech system. Your sand filter handles physical debris and particles, while the Claritech system destroys bacteria and algae using copper and silver ions. However, neither removes dissolved organic waste (like sunscreen, sweat, and body oils) from the water. You will still need a minimal weekly maintenance dose of an oxidiser (such as non-chlorine shock) to keep the water crystal clear. The good news: you'll reduce your traditional chemical usage by up to 90% compared to a standard chlorine pool.

Does it work with a salt water chlorinator?

Absolutely — they make a perfect tag-team. The NEC unit takes over 90% of the sanitising by killing algae, bacteria, and viruses. Your salt chlorinator is then freed up to act purely as an oxidiser, burning off organic waste like sweat and sunscreen. Because the ioniser does the heavy lifting, you can turn your chlorinator's output down to just 10–15%, dramatically extending the life of your salt cell.

The NEC-20 operates at just 5 watts. The NEC-2000 operates at a maximum of 36 watts. Both units only draw power while your pool or spa pump is actively running. The included timer switch lets you match the unit's operating hours precisely to your pump cycle, so there's zero wasted energy.

Compare that to salt chlorinators (typically 100–300W), UV systems, or chemical dosing pumps — the Claritech system is one of the lowest-energy sanitisation options available for residential pools. Over a full NZ summer season, the difference in running costs is significant.

Both units are rated IP54 for outdoor use and operate on standard 110–240V supply — no special wiring or electrician required.

Installation & Sizing

Which system do I need?

  • NEC-20 — above-ground pools and spas up to 20,000 litres

How is it installed?

Both units install inline with your existing pool or spa pump — no plumber required. The NEC-2000 connects via 2-inch BSP threaded fittings (or 1-inch with the supplied threaded nipple adaptor); the NEC-20 uses included 32/38mm hose adapters and a threaded adapter. All hardware is included in the box.

Place the unit between the pump and the filter. Water passes through the ionisation chamber on every pump cycle, continuously maintaining ion levels. A dedicated timer is recommended to schedule the NEC-2000's runtime independently of the pump — this is not included but is strongly recommended.

Does it work with my existing pH levels?

No pH adjustment is required. The NEC-2000 operates effectively across a pH range of 6.5–9.5, consistent with the German Drinking Water Directive testing range. This covers virtually all residential pool conditions.

If replacing a chlorinator or salt cell, the Claritech unit fits into the same inline position using the supplied adapters.

Eco-Friendly & Backwash

Ionisation is the only purification method that is simultaneously non-toxic, non-corrosive to pipes and fittings, not temperature-dependent, not pH-dependent, produces no lime scale, has no high energy consumption, and leaves no harmful chemical residue.

Backwash water: Because Claritech-purified water contains no chlorine, salt, or chemical residues, backwash water is safe to discharge onto lawns and garden beds. The copper ion level in correctly maintained pool water sits between 0.3–1.0 mg/L — well within safe limits for garden irrigation and consistent with NZ drinking water standards for copper. Unlike chlorinated or salt pool backwash, Claritech backwash water won't bleach grass, damage soil biology, or harm aquatic ecosystems if it reaches stormwater.
